There are currently more school counselors than school social workers in Washington state but the value and skills of school social workers are quickly being recognized. More jobs are opening, for example in 2007 the Seattle School District hired their first 3 school social workers! There were at least 6 other new jobs in various parts of the state!

School social workers in Washington are hired to be:

  • Elementary, middle or high school social workers.
  • Truancy interventionists.
  • Mental health specialists in self contained classrooms.
  • Behavior intervention specialists.
  • And other positions.

How do I become a school social worker in Washington state?

  1. You must have an MSW from an accredited college or university.  Click here for universities in Washington state that offer an MSW and school social work. 
  2. You must have a valid Washington state School social worker certificate.  If you are in an MSW program in Washington now click here for information about the Residency certificate.  If you have an MSW from another state click here for information about how to obtain a "post MSW" certificate.
